Your First 72 Hours After Surgery Care at Home: Blue Med’s Precise Plan
The first three days after surgery shape your entire recovery. Blue Med Home Health Care Center turns complex discharge orders into a simple, stress-free routine—so you move sooner, hurt less, and avoid complications.
Before You Arrive Home
Blue Med pre-confirms prescriptions, equipment (walker, shower chair, ice unit), and your start-of-care visit. We guide a quick home setup: clear pathways, non-slip mats, raised seating, and a bedside caddy for meds, water, and a thermometer.
Hours 0–24: Stabilize & Control Pain
A Blue Med nurse reconciles every medication and creates a clock-easy schedule (including stool softener if ordered). We label doses, set alarms, and review allergies. Vitals are checked; you’ll log temperature, pain (0–10), and fluid intake. We teach incision protection and clean-hands hygiene. Micro-moves begin: ankle pumps, deep breathing or incentive spirometer (10 breaths/hour as directed), and two to three assisted hallway walks to reduce clot and pneumonia risk. Nutrition: small, protein-rich meals (aim ~20–30 g per meal) and steady hydration.
Hours 24–48: Prevent Complications & Activate
Your clinician assesses swelling, drainage, sensation, and mobility, then adjusts the plan with your surgeon as needed. We set an ice/elevate rhythm (e.g., 20 minutes on, 20 off if appropriate), coach safe transfers and bathroom tactics, and ensure correct device fit (brace angles, walker height). We also line up refills and confirm your first surgical follow-up.
Hours 48–72: Build Momentum & Confidence
Blue Med PT/OT starts gentle, targeted exercises to protect the repair while restoring function (e.g., quad sets, heel slides, shoulder pendulums—as prescribed). We shape a daily cadence: wake, meds, meals, walks, exercises, rest, and wound check. Sleep positioning is optimized (pillows to offload pressure; no crossing legs after hip precautions). We fine-tune your home—grab bars, lighting, cord control—to lower fall risk. You’ll know green-light activities to do, yellow-light tasks to pace, and red-flag symptoms that mean stop and call.
Red-Flag Symptoms—Act Now
Chest pain, shortness of breath, heavy bleeding, fever above your provider’s limit, calf pain with swelling, sudden numbness/weakness, or pain not relieved by medication. Call emergency services first, then notify Blue Med so we can coordinate next steps.
